Signs You Might Have an Electrical Issue at Home: Troubleshooting and When to Book an Electrical Repair in Singapore

15 September 2025

Electricity is something we use every day without thinking about it. From charging your phone to running the aircon, the modern Singapore home depends on a stable and safe electrical system. But when something goes wrong, ignoring the warning signs can lead to serious risks from appliance damage to electrical fires.

Knowing what to look out for, how to troubleshoot minor issues, and when to book an electrical repair helps you keep your home safe while avoiding unnecessary disruptions.

Signs You Might Have an Electrical Issue at Home

1. Frequent Power Trips

If your circuit breaker (MCB) keeps tripping, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong. This could mean your circuit is overloaded with too many appliances, or there is a wiring fault that needs professional inspection. In older HDB flats, outdated wiring may also be the culprit.

2. Burning Smells or Smoke

A burning smell near sockets, switches, or the distribution board should never be ignored. This indicates overheating, melting insulation, or sparking behind the wall. If smoke accompanies the smell, turn off the power at the main switch immediately and call an electrician.

3. Flickering or Dimming Lights

If your lights flicker or dim when appliances like the washing machine or aircon start up, it usually means your circuit is overloaded or your wiring is failing to handle the current demand.

4. Warm or Discoloured Outlets and Switches

Sockets and switches should never feel hot to the touch. Discolouration, burn marks, or warmth are warning signs of loose connections or overheating.

5. Unusual Sounds

Buzzing, popping, or crackling noises from outlets, switches, or the electrical panel indicate loose wiring or arcing. This can quickly escalate into a fire hazard.

6. Shocks When Touching Appliances

Getting a mild shock when plugging or unplugging devices isn’t just uncomfortable — it’s dangerous. It may mean poor grounding or faulty wiring that needs immediate attention.

7. Appliances Failing Repeatedly

If multiple appliances in your home keep failing or shorting out, the issue may not be the devices themselves but rather the power supply. Irregular voltage or faulty wiring can cause long-term damage.

How to Troubleshoot Electrical Issues Safely

While major electrical problems should always be handled by a professional, there are a few basic checks you can do at home.

Reset the Circuit Breaker

If the power trips, first switch off all appliances connected to the affected circuit. Then reset the circuit breaker. If it trips again immediately, the problem is more serious and requires professional help.

Check for Overloaded Outlets

Avoid plugging too many high-power appliances (like air fryers, kettles, and microwaves) into the same socket extension. Overloading causes overheating and trips. Spread appliances across different outlets where possible.

Test with Different Appliances

If a single outlet isn’t working, try plugging in another appliance. This helps confirm whether the outlet is faulty or the appliance itself is the problem.

Replace Light Bulbs

For flickering or dim lights, change the bulb first. If the problem continues, it may be loose wiring or a circuit issue.

Inspect for Visible Damage

Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or frayed cords around sockets and switches. If you spot damage, avoid using the fixture and call an electrician.

Important: Limit your troubleshooting to visual checks and resetting breakers. Never attempt DIY rewiring or panel repairs. It’s unsafe and may violate EMA regulations.

When to Book an Electrical Repair

Here are situations where you should call a professional immediately:

Persistent Power Trips

If your MCB keeps tripping despite unplugging appliances, it may be a wiring fault, a short circuit, or a faulty breaker. These require testing equipment that only electricians have.

Burning Smells, Sparks, or Smoke

These are urgent red flags for electrical fire hazards. Switch off your main power supply and call an emergency electrician right away.

Repeated Appliance Failures

When fridges, washing machines, or aircons keep breaking down due to power issues, an electrician can check if your home has grounding or voltage stability problems.

Damaged Wiring or Fixtures

Exposed wires, melted sockets, and cracked outlets are dangerous. A technician can safely replace them and check for deeper wiring faults.

Old or Outdated Wiring

In older HDB flats and landed homes, wiring systems may no longer handle modern appliances. Rewiring by a professional improves both safety and efficiency.

Renovation or Installation Work

If you’re adding new appliances like a cooker hood, hob, or aircon unit, or renovating your kitchen, you’ll need a technician to ensure circuits are safe and compliant.

Why Hiring a Professional Matters

  • Safety First: DIY fixes risk electric shocks or fires. Professionals are trained to handle live circuits safely.
  • Proper Diagnosis: What looks like a small issue (like flickering lights) could actually point to deeper wiring faults.
  • Long-Term Savings: Fixing the root cause prevents costly appliance damage and reduces electricity wastage.

Electrical problems should never be ignored, no matter how small they seem. From flickering lights to frequent power trips, these signs are often early warnings of bigger issues. While safe troubleshooting like checking bulbs, testing appliances, or resetting breakers can help you identify minor problems, more serious cases always require professional attention.

In Singapore, hiring a technician isn’t just about convenience, it’s about protecting your home and family from electrical hazards. If you notice burning smells, repeated trips, or damaged outlets, don’t delay. Book a professional inspection and repair before the issue worsens.

With the right care and timely intervention, you can keep your home safe, efficient, and free from electrical worries.

Electrical DB panel Picture

In modern society such as Singapore densely populated by high rise building, we are vulnerable to electrical failure within our home even though the government have given us good stable power supply throughout the year. Most common power failure we are going to discuss is to teach consumer on how to temporary restore power in 15 minutes before engaging a qualified elctrician to inspect and resolve any problems. With the invention of the ELCB or RCCB which has given good safety to consumers but have also created a problem of inevitable power tripping. The function and how it works can be easily googled and here we are only to teach the 15 minutes power restoration procedure only for HDB flat residents: *** Please take note for precaution that your hands are dry and you wear a dry rubber slipper while attempting to DIY restore power and that no doubts the STEPS are perfectly SAFE PROCUDURES according to PUB regulation, I am not responsible for any unfortunate incidents that may result from this DIY advise and all actions are purely by your personal decision, responsibilties and liabilities.*** 1. Always have a good working torch light ready in the house place at the Electrical DB panel incase the blackout is at night. 2. When power trip, do not panic and if during the day it would be easier and if at night just use the torch light. 3. Go to DB panel open the DB Cover and shine see the Breaker switches must all be UP and if any 1 or 2 switches is down do not push up immediately. 4. Take a breath and recall or ask anyone in the family what was the last action that cause the trip, or is it just trip by itself. 5. If anyone can recall the action, then just use the torch light if at night and go see what was it and have it turn off and if there is a plug top just unplug it. 6. Then go back to DB to push back up the 1 breaker switch especially the 1 with the reset button follow by the other individual breakers within a row. 7. However if there are NO BREAKER Switches down then just push down every Breaker switches and similary repeat Step 4 and 5 8. Once all the Breaker switches are down and step 5 taken then go outside look for the Electrical Meter and find the external incoming supply breaker. 9. If anyone breaker is down and you have switch off all breaker in your house by pushing down, it will be very safe to just Push Up the Tripped Breaker. 10. Once restored power outside, go back inside DB to 1st push up the Main MCB which is 40A or 63A follow by the RCCB which have the reset button. 11. Finally start pushing 1 by 1 starting from the breaker label showing 6A or 10A which is for the lights. 12. If at any moment you push up and cause the RCCB to trip again, do not panic just leave the Breaker DOWN and reset the RCCB again. 13. Continue until all breakers are up position except for those that trip and call us or your regular electricain to attend to the Breaker that is down. 14. You may DIY to go find which part of the house do not have power and see if you could find anything that cause the trip, just unplug or switch off. 15. The above are for Power Trip by RCCB only, due to either carelessness on multi adapter, hair dryer, ironer, kettle, oven, dryer or the lightinings, etc.
